"Aluminum is weak" is one of the comments we hear friquently. We primarily use tempered aluminum for our fabrication which is 4x as strong. Compared to common 44w structural steel, tempered aluminum is nearly as strong. In most architectural applications, aluminum is more than sufficient for the job. Aluminum is also 1/3 the weight of steel, which makes if cheaper and easier to transport and install.
A concern some clients have, does Aluminum get hot in the summertime? If you've ever touched metal that has been out in the sun, it can feel very hot. However, what you were likely touching was stainless steel. Aluminum dissipates heat 10-15x faster than steel. In fact, it’s often used for making heat-sinks to cool hot parts. Aluminum items will feel cooler than other surfaces in the summertime as the heat will be lost very fast. Its great for making outdoor furniture like tables and chairs that will not get hot.
"Aluminum is expensive" is a common perception, but it's not always the case. When it comes to metal costs, it is often calculated by weight. Due to its lightweight nature, aluminum actually costs around the same price as steel when comparing the same profiles. However, aluminum also saves a lot of costs in labor. Because it is not as hard as steel, it can be cut and welded much faster, leading to significant savings. At SnapFab, we understand the importance of cost-effectiveness, and we strive to provide our clients with the best value for their money.
We primarily use Marine Grade Aluminum which is designed for building boats. This material offers superior strength, with exceptional corrosion resistance. Unlike steel which will rust outdoors, Aluminum is an ideal material to use in rainy Vancouver. Using aluminum in your project is a great investment, because you can be sure it will last for a long time and will require little maintenance and replacement.
